The Digital Music Business.

The music industry (or music business) sells

compositions

and performances of music. Among the many individuals and organizations that operate within the industry are the musicians who compose and perform the music; the companies and professionals who create and sell recorded music (e.g.,music publishers ,producers, studios, engineers, record labels, retail and online music stores, performance rights organisations); those that present live music performances (booking agents, promoters, music venues, road crew); professionals who assist musicians with their careers (talent managers, business managers, entertainment lawyers); those who broadcast music (satellite and broadcast radio); journalists; educators;musical instrumentmanufacturers; as well as many others.

The Impact of The New Deals.

The popularity of MP3 provided a wake-up call to the recording industry and to companies promoting proprietary digital audio formats. Because of the potential for piracy provided by open formats like MP3, the recording industry is attempting to establish a “secure” digital music format before they start releasing downloadable music by major artists.

Millions of people are already using MP3, so any secure format will need to have compelling advantages to convince them to switch. Even if new formats are sanctioned by the recording industry, consumers can still choose to convert songs from CDs (which are unencrypted) to MP3. Or they can use a sound card and a simple piece of software to convert encrypted music to MP3 (or other unencrypted format).

Even with secure formats, piracy will always be a threat. As fast as the industry comes up with security measures, hackers will find ways to crack them. But an even larger threat to the major record labels is the advent of Internet-based labels, and artists leaving the fold to sell their music directly to fans.

BE A WINNER IN AN INDUSTRY FULL OF LOSERS

The sheer numbers involved in today’s competitive climate for composers and songwriters interested
in getting their music into film and television mean there will be far more losers than winners. The
industry is swamped with starry-eyed people, young and not-so-young, who want to be the next James
Horner or John Williams and think that a bunch of string sample libraries, a ton of studio gear, and a
measure of talent will get them there. They utterly fail to understand the industry is a business, not a
talent competition. It’s about buying and selling music. Talent is merely a prerequisite, not a ticket to
instant success. Most of these people will last a while in the business, exhaust their money and perhaps
their families’ money, and eventually drop out. To be blunt, they’re the losers. They tried to do
something and failed – often because they were not fully prepared with the knowledge and information
necessary to win in this industry.
Now, “win” is a subjective word here – “winning” doesn’t necessarily mean being a superstar
composer getting million dollar deals. And being a “winner” doesn’t necessarily mean winning every
job you submit for – that’s a virtual impossibility for all practical purposes.
Being a winner does mean making the most out of every opportunity that you create through your
relationship-building efforts, combined with the knowledge that from successful relationships, will
come successful projects and jobs, which lead to more relationships, projects and jobs, which can
create a successful, upwardly moving career and increased success.
Here are 10 things you may want to consider as you create your own winning attitude:
• Realize the ugly nature of today’s competitive industry climate and stay positive.
• Never, ever take criticism of your music or rejection from a job personally. Remember, it’s
almost always a “fit” issue about whether your music is the best fit for the picture, rather than
being a quality issue of your music not being “good enough” etc.
• Always be building relationships with people in the industry.
• No matter what adversity may beset you, never get jaded or bitter. Being bitter about the
industry or your failures only serves as a negative force on your life and career.
• Be easy to do business with – know the business side of things well, always be available by
mobile or other means, and serve as a resource, not a vendor, to your clients and others you
have industry relationships with.
• If in doubt, communicate. If you’re unsure of some aspect of a business relationship, project,
music submission, or other matter, often the best thing to do is to communicate with the person
involved and clear things up. Leaving matters to chance or guesswork can have disastrous
results.Staying Focus from the insideout can establish a greater outcome and enjoyment for networking your goals and passion to success in this new multimedia business of worldwide entertainment.
